Odd Jobs
Odd Jobs Because my summer plans are about as fluid as one of those squishy water toys (anyone else remember these weird things?), Iâve been looking into a lot of part-time jobs. Iâll need something else to occupy time, earn a bit of money, and begin exploring some random careers. Iâm currently planning on taking a [emailprotected] class, Creating Digital Learning Materials for Biology, which hopefully will be a blend of my interests in science and media. But, in waiting for the summer session to start, Iâve found two short-term (and vaguely connected) jobs to fill these few weeks: helping out with Tech Reunions and stage managing a musical commissioned by the Class of 1954. Tech Reunions are exactly what they sound likeâ"MIT alumni gathering on campus to see old friends, reminisce about the good old days, see how the institute has changed, and go to snazzy events together. Basically post-MIT CPW. The Alumni Association searches for current MIT students to help staff events and run registrationâ"itâs only a couple of days and alums (especially the older folks) oftentimes like to talk to current students about what life at MIT is like nowadays. For example, today I met the person who painted the sign over the door to the coffeehouse, back in the day when this space on the 3rd floor of the student center still served coffee. Apparently this particular alum was a manager of the coffeehouse at one point, but his successor wanted to rename the space âthe java hut.â Needless to say, this didnât sit well with this particular student so he painted the doorway in the middle of the night. He was happy to find out that his legacy, of sorts, lives on because students nowadays still refer to the empty room as the coffeehouse because of his efforts. Here are a couple more pictures of the registration room and the souvenir corner, where I was stationed. Over the course of a single day, I met alums ranging from the class of 1944 to 2009, and handed out gifts from fleece blankets (â59) to huge brass rat paperweights (â89, for their 25th reunion) to caps (â64, for their 50th reunion where they get the iconic red jackets). One of my favorite gifts to give out is a tire gauge (â99), which is apparently referencing the fact that Click and Clack of Car Talk (an NPR radio show about cars) spoke at their commencement. Most people are puzzled or apathetic toward this souvenir, but there was one guy who exclaimed some variation of âAWESOME!â with a fist pump upon receiving his. We complimented him on his enthusiasm and he gave an extra cheer for good measure. After busy days of checking people in, giving them their freebies, wishing them a fun weekend, building towers out of business cards (pictured below), and watching my friend Rachel R. â16 swat fat flies with ninja-like precision (total death count = 48), I headed straight to evening rehearsals for Weâll Get It Right. Weâll Get It Right is a musical about the Harvard vs. MIT rivalry that two representatives of the Class of 1954 commissioned for their 50th reunion. It was written, orchestrated, and directed by incredibly talented MIT Music and Theater Arts Faculty. (If youâre curious about the plot, hereâs a more detailed synopsis and cast list). I got involved in the process a couple weeks ago thanks to the technical Theater Arts faculty in Rinaldi, whom Iâve worked with several times on Dramashop student productions here. After a short email exchange, an in-person meeting with the director, and some double-checking of schedules, I signed on as a stage manager for this quirky show. And it has been quite an experience putting together a full-length musical in only two weeks. Itâs definitely the closest Iâve ever come to professional theater (and may ever come⦠but weâll see what the future holds) because: 1) I got paid real life money. (Wut. Iâve been involved in theater since sophomore year of high school. All voluntary, all just experimenting and learning and not knowing what Iâm doing. In fact, I usually end up losing money because getting reimbursed for small things is usually more hassle than itâs worth) 2) The actors are FANTASTIC (i.e. theyâre basically professional i.e. I am so impressed with the quality of Musical Theater and Vocal Performance students/graduates from The Boston Conservatory as well as the willingness of some MIT students with only choral backgrounds who really embraced acting) 3) Orchestrations were being created and revised as we were rehearsing (it was a very crunched timeline and the orchestra was adapting so quickly to new scores and hundreds of single-note corrections which I, a fairly musically inept person, cant even begin to comprehend much less keep track of on a day-to-day basis). I donât really have a better way of describing my experience other than including some pictures from my perspective as a stage manager (pardon the quality, phone pictures in a dark backstage area are not the best idea⦠oh well). There are props tables and mashed potato ice cream (movie theatre magic!) and blurry cast photos, oh my! Aaand update with some better production stills, thanks to Jonathan Sachs: Iâm so grateful that this summer has given me the opportunity to really immerse myself in theatre again (if only for a little while), as I tend to shy away from it as an extracurricular during the busy semester. [Oh, also, hereâs my public farewell to members of the class of 2014. Some of them have impacted my life in innumerable ways, and Iâll miss their presence on campus dearly. Much love, and I know all of you will be incredibly successful no matter what challenges you tackle 3]

Introduction Death is a sensitive topic for most people. The death of a person or of a loved one is an event that is ritualized across the globe. Death therefore is defined as the permanent cessation of all vital functions that sustains the life of an organism. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Attitudes Toward Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide" essay for you Create order Physician Assisted Suicide is defined as the suicide of a patient by drug prescription with the provided help of a physician. Through this way, terminally ill patients are able to end their life and leave earth in a dignified way. It is currently legalized in six out of fifty US states and in some other countries such as Belgium, Canada, and Switzerland. The option to go through the PAS is only limited to people who are currently terminally ill. Terminally ill patients are defined as people who have illnesses which are either incurable, or no treatment would be effective any more. Aside from the fact that these terminally ill patients would die in their own way and in their own desired time, they also claim that this would help in the reduction of treatment costs that is not only burden to the patient themselves but also to their families who they would leave behind whether they go through it or not. Some people disagree to PAS being legalized across the country because they claim th at the terminally ill person may be mentally impaired as well; and that this practice also goes against the physicians Hippocratic Oath. Most people who are interested in the legalization and dismissal of this movement are politicians, physicians, families, and the terminally ill patients themselves. Body Claim Terminally ill patients are the only ones legally recognized that can be a candidate for the claim. 70% of people who opt to go through the PAS program are cancer patients. Mostly are people with old age, are white, and are well-educated. To be considered, the person should also be a resident of either one of the states where the statute is legalized. Aside from being terminally ill physically, the person should be of sound mind to be considered. This means that the person should not be going through mental health issues that can be a reason why they choosing to do the procedure. They should be able to communicate well on their own with their health care providers and be able to verbalize their full consent. In regards to their illness, they should be diagnosed to die within the next six months or less and their illness should be approved as a reasonable medical illness that is terminal. Aside from being verbally competent, the person should also be able to take the medicine on their own. The physicianrs job is only to prescribe and be there during the procedure to make sure the person is decided to do it and to make sure the drug worked afterwards. Basically to pronounce and confirm time of death. They cannot administer it themselves nor can other family members. The person themselves should be able to do it alone. The choice whether they should be alone when doing it or with family members is dependent on their choice. Also, there must be two physicians who had approved of the persons eligibility. Second opinions are required not optional. It must be proved that the person is really terminally ill to be a candidate for the program. (Emanuel, Onwuteaka-Philipsen, Urwin, and Cohen, 2016). Only eight states out of fifty in the United States has Physician Assisted Suicide legalized. This includes California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii (takes effect on January 1, 2019), Montana, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington (Death with Dignity, 2018). This past several years, the legalization of this act across the country has been focused on. Especially the state of Michigan, where Dr. Jack Kevorkian is one of the most famous supporter who had prompted huge actions towards its legalization. This topic is very sensitive because of the ethics that it goes against. The issue on hand that makes it impossible for it to be legalized on all states is whether it is ethical that the entire country and its society should allow any form of suicide. But that issue goes against the main purpose for legalizing it which is to provide relief from further suffering of those who are terminally ill, individual autonomy which is basically freedom of choice. And if ever it is legalized and th e issue about the society allowing its social values to be changed, is whether doctors should participate. As healers, this practice goes against what they believe in (Bachman, Alcser, Doukas, Lichtenstein, Richard, and Corning, 1996). Although controversial and widely spread issue, only a few people go through the program. According to studies, only about 20% of the US population was reported to have requested for said procedure and only 5% of that actually went through with it. In Oregon and Washington combined, only 1% of physicians reported to have written prescription for the medication used in the procedure. (Emanuel, Onwuteaka-Philipsen, Urwin, and Cohen, 2016). Relief from pain is not the main reason why terminally ill patients decide to go through this route they see it as dying with dignity and control rather than being controlled by their illness. According to studies, a big chunk of the people who request or go through with PAS, are on palliative care. This means that they are no longer going through extensive procures or surgeries and they are only being given comforting measures to help with their condition but not with the goal to cure them anymore. They do not report to be complaining of pain but instead, they are motivated by their situation and where they are at. Having to stay at a hospice or a nursing home or even at home with having nothing to do other than lay in bed all day can be terribly depressing and degrading. That is why people who decide on the PAS mostly wants to be free to decide to die with dignity. It is not the pain, it is the idea that they are losing grasp of their lives and the last resort to have the satisfact ion of control again is to decide to commit to physician assisted suicide. (Emanuel, Onwuteaka-Philipsen, Urwin, and Cohen, 2016). Conclusion I, therefore, conclude that the legalization of the physician assisted suicide is an issue with a lot of pros and cons. But setting aside all the political and legal issues correlated to this topic, we should always consider why it is being moved to be legalized in the first place. It is to give comfort and dignity to those who are terminally ill and wants to die knowing that they are leaving with peace of mind and heart. This issue is not legalizing suicide in general, it is still regulated and is only applicable to people with terminally ill patients. It is not saying yes to death. It is saying yes to have a say about how you want your life to be when youre facing a terminal illness. Learning more about this issue only made me more knowledgeable about it and it made me agree with it more. Before I have researched thoroughly about this topic, I have had an idea about it and I completely agree with it. It makes me sad that they had no other choice other than death but I also consider their feelings and their situation. And if the only and last option to comfort them and give them peace is to let them o and allow them to go through physician assisted suicide, then so be it. Loneliness in Hamlet The article ââ¬Å"Personal and Social Influences on Loneliness: The Mediating Effect of Social Provisionsâ⬠defined loneliness by stating, ââ¬Å"First, loneliness is thought to result from perceived deficiencies in oneââ¬â¢s social world. Second, loneliness is thought to be a subjective state experienced by the individual, rather than some objective feature in the individualââ¬â¢s social world. Third, this experience frequently is unpleasant and distressingâ⬠(Kraus et al. We will write a custom essay sample on Loneliness in Hamlet or any similar topic only for you Order Now 85). Everyone faces loneliness and despair in their lives. In todayââ¬â¢s world people may feel misunderstood or isolated, or they could feel deficient because the lack a family or missing a loved one. In Hamlet, much of the loneliness and suffering he endures is due to the secrets he is forced to keep. There were many instances where Hamlet felt alone and upset, but he could not share his pain with anyone else. We can also find examples of Hamletââ¬â¢s despair due to betrayal from his so-called friends. The loneliness and despair in Hamlet are factors that added to his suffering and caused his overall demise. Hamlet is a lonely, isolated character, with few friends and little faith in humanity. His loneliness plays a great role in his downfall, by alienating him from his friends and family and eventually taking control of his actions. He does not share the knowledge of his fatherââ¬â¢s murder with anyone. He canââ¬â¢t trust his friends and family, and he hides his true feelings from his only love, Ophelia, adding to her insanity. These events eventually lead to his downfall, and could have been avoided by sharing his dilemma. Throughout the play, Hamlet discovers who is loyal to him and also who his real enemies are. Right away, Hamlet dislikes his uncle. He is already distraught over losing his father, but he has also to deal with the marriage of his beloved mother to his uncle, who killed his father and whom he perceives as being cruel and cold-hearted. Hamlet refers to his uncle as, ââ¬Å"A little more than kin, and less than kindâ⬠(1. 2. 564). This clearly demonstrates the extreme hatred Hamlet has towards his uncle. Hamlet also feels intensely betrayed by his mother. Claude Williamson states that ââ¬Å"[â⬠¦] the shock which he suffered on hearing of the murder and on realizing the full horror of his motherââ¬â¢s action made, as it were, a wound in his mind, which hurt whenever he thought of his uncle or of his motherââ¬â¢s connection with that uncleâ⬠(98). Hamlet trusted his mother and feels as if she has disregarded any love she ever felt towards her former husband. In Hamletââ¬â¢s eyes, his mother has offended his father, and he blames her for his death. Hamlet says to his mother, ââ¬Å"A bloody deed! Almost as bad, good mother, As kill a king, and marry with his brotherâ⬠(3. 4. 621). This shows that he is revolted by the idea of the marriage between his uncle and his mother. Hamlet also encounters loneliness and despair with Ophelia. Due to his experiences throughout the play, Hamlet distances himself from Ophelia, whom he is actually in love with. He does this by insulting her and convincing her that he is mad and never had any true feelings for her. By pretending to be mad and not telling Ophelia about his true feelings, he is misleading her as well. Ophelia believed his affections were true and she fell in love, only to be crushed by his madness. However, in his madness, Hamlet came to see Ophelia in a disheveled state, ââ¬Å"[â⬠¦ ] with his doublet all unbraced, no hat upon his head, his stockings fouled, ungartered, and down-gyved to his ankle, pale as his shirt, his knees knocking [â⬠¦ ]â⬠and frightened her (2. 1. 585). Her father bid her not to speak to him, and she complied. Poor Hamlet sank deeper into his madness, alone and dejected. Ophelia, also depressed, was ready to take her own life. Hamlet is devastated because he never actually meant to hurt her. Hamlet says, ââ¬Å"I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sumâ⬠(5. 1. 654). This shows how much Hamlet truly loved Ophelia. The last factor that contributed to Hamletââ¬â¢s loneliness is that he didnââ¬â¢t share his problems with anyone (except for Horatio). He hid his hatred towards his uncle, the loss he felt with his mother, and the secret of his encounter with his murdered fatherââ¬â¢s ghost. If he had told more people his secrets, then they could have been more willing to help him. The person who could have helped him the most and spared him the most grief is Ophelia. By telling her about his fatherââ¬â¢s murder and about his plan to avenge his death, Ophelia would have provided Hamlet with comfort and understanding. His tragic flaw came from the misleading act he put on in order to hide his ambitions, and the crafty schemes he came up with to reach his goals. However, some topics are so complex that Hamlet may face limitations in discussing them with people who are not as deep as he. Hamletââ¬â¢s loneliness was caused by many incidents, some of which Hamlet brought upon him himself. Had he shared his problems with the few people he could trust, and not hidden the knowledge of his fatherââ¬â¢s murder, he might have avoided the great loss of his family, his friends, and his life. Secrets, deception, and despair plagued Hamlet throughout the play, and ultimately caused his downfall. It is important that we have support from our friends through difficult times. When we alienate people by keeping secrets from them, it is to our disadvantage. We cause our own loneliness. How to cite Loneliness in Hamlet, Essay examples

But the question is whether or not youââ¬â¢re perfect for each other. Firstly, I was massively relieved that Adam gave me something to base the talk on and around, as usually the talk is the time when someone imparts wisdom about married life and Iââ¬â¢ve only been married about 4 weeks. So my wisdom about marriage is fairly limited! I can tell you that marriage is awesome, and thatââ¬â¢s about it! Although itââ¬â¢s probably a relief to hear, now youââ¬â¢ve already tied the knot! But this quote is also really helpful to have as a focus for your wedding and for your marriage life, because it highlights many a truth that will help you in your life together. So it is incredibly important to remember the first thing it tells you. Adam ââ¬â you are not perfect. Beth ââ¬â you are not perfect. You both know enough about life to know that this is key in ANY relationship, especially with each other. You are not perfect. You will make mistakes. You will be wrong. Your reactions to things will not always be right. Sometimes youââ¬â¢ll be snappy or selfish or stubborn or too passive or too bothered by things. Youââ¬â¢ll say, do and think things wrong. As well as not saying or not doing those things you should. And in that circumstance ââ¬â you need to remember that you may very well not be in the right every time. And sometimes in relationships of any kind, the 3 words that hold it together are not ââ¬Å"I Love Youâ⬠, but ââ¬Å"I am sorryâ⬠. And I bet youââ¬â¢ll find that pretty helpful to remember over time. Neither of you are perfect. But that works the other way. Adam ââ¬â Beth is not perfect. Beth ââ¬â Adam is not perfect. Remember that as you kick off your married life. It really will help. Donââ¬â¢t have any false expectations of each other. It can be very easy for people to enter into relationships and marriages expecting amazing, Hollywood-esque things and to then be hugely disappointed and for that to cause tensions. So right off the bat, donââ¬â¢t enter into this marriage with any great expectations ââ¬â except the expectation of what you intend to give. And what you should intend and expect to give is unconditional love. All the time. Even when the other person is demonstrating their imperfections weââ¬â¢re admitting you have. Because the time when either of you 2 will need Love the most is the time that you least deserve it. Because you know that Love is not just a feeling of the heart. It is a decision, not just an emotion. And on those occasions when one of you has demonstrated your imperfections, you need to remember to decide to love each other. Thatââ¬â¢s what youââ¬â¢ve done here today. Youââ¬â¢ve decided to Love each other. Forever. So weââ¬â¢ve agreed. Neither of you are perfect! Which is a very strange start for a wedding talk! But you chose the quoteâ⬠¦ not me! However, anyone that knows you knows how perfect you are for each other.

Everyday Lessons From a Dad Essays
Everyday Lessons From a Dad Essays Everyday Lessons From a Dad Essay Everyday Lessons From a Dad Essay I may not know everything about a car, but I have learned quite a bit from my father. Everyday lessons from dad always help in any situation, especially when you are the girl that walks into the mechanics station, and your looked at like you know absolutely nothing, and sadly, most of the time, you get taking advantage of. The purpose of this essay is to share my experience of changing brake pads, by giving a step-by-step guide. ââ¬Å"How to change Brake Pads on a car. â⬠Step One: Park your car in a comfortable working area. You may be here for a little while depending on your previous experience with cars. Step Two: SAFETY FIRST! Make sure to block the back wheels to avoid the car from rolling after you have jacked it up. Also, make sure to place the car in park, set it firmly. Step Three: Grab you toolbox. Its time to go to work! You should start with the front wheels. Grab the tire iron (long metal rod with a socket on the end, some people may have one that looks like a cross). Okay, so first you want to simply loosen the lug nuts, using the tire iron, just enough to break them free. Now, youââ¬â¢ll want to jack up your car. Step Four: Now, you can proceed to take the lug nuts completely off and remove the wheel. As a safety precaution, you should place the under the front of the car. In an instance you have a faulty jack, the wheel will not only protect your car from bodily damage, but you as well. Step Five: As your looking at this contraction, wondering ââ¬ËWhere do I even begin? ââ¬â¢, this process is actually very simple once you understand its components. So, you have 4 basic parts. You have the caliper, two brake pads, a rotor, and of course, some bolts and clips to hold everything in its place. What are these so-called basic parts? â⬠, well I am glad you asked. I will give a brief breakdown. The Caliper- the job of this part is to squeeze the brake pads toward a centrally located metal plate -the rotor- this produces friction, which initially will slow the speed of your car. (The Caliper is the bright green section, shown in the picture below on the left. ) The Brake Pads- the job of t he brake pads are to move toward one another, gripping the rotor between them and slowing the wheels. They attached to the caliper and hover either side of the rotor. these are shown in the picture below, on the right. ) The Rotor- this is they shiny metal plate in the center. Want to know a secret? If you canââ¬â¢t see your reflection, your discââ¬â¢s my need servicing or replacement. (the rotor is the shown in the picture below on the left. ) Step Six: Okay, now that you know what your working with. Time to get back to work. Remove the bolts or clips, depending on the make of your car, holding the caliper in place. Gently slide the caliper out and away from the rotor. See the brake pads? Remove the bolts or clips holding them in place and remove the pads. Step Seven: Next we need to move the piston back to itââ¬â¢s beginning location, to prepare it for the new brake pads. You can use the heel of your hand to push the piston back into itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"full openâ⬠position. Step Eight: When you went shopping for your new brake pads, you should have also picked up a couple small packets of grease. You will use these to lubricate the brake pads. When lubricating the pads make sure not to grease the wrong side. Do not grease the front side, the side that comes into contact with the rotor. Okay, youââ¬â¢ve applied the grease. Now, you can attach the brake pad to the plate, using clips or bolts, and slide the whole thing in place. Step Nine: Your almost done! Put it in reverse and reassemble the system, just as you took it apart. Once you have your tire on and tightened in place. Continue on with your other tires, using the same process, if needed. Step Ten: Joy-Ride! Now take your car out to test your new brakes! You may hear a few scratching and screeching sounds at first but it will go away in just a couple of days. Make sure everything is in place before and after the test drive. Nothing is more important than your carââ¬â¢s ability to stop itself. Underestimating your brake system could have some very serious consequences. Below is a diagram of the whole brake system, this should help you get an idea of where everything is located. Next time you go in to have your brakes changed, look at what the mechanics charge. Then go to an auto parts store and see for yourself the affordability of brake pads. Lastly, ask yourself if you have an extra hour to spare to save quite a bit of money. I think you will find the time is definitely worth the extra money you will save.
